Singer donates houses to tsunami victims
Ten families made homeless by the tsunami in the South were given
houses last week by Singer Sri Lanka in keeping with the Company's
commitment to contribute towards the long-term rehabilitation work in
the tsunami devastated areas.
The houses were built at a cost of Rs. 4 m at Galwala, a village off
Hambantota town. The houses are part of a government approved project
initiated by a voluntary organisation attached to Mettaramaya,
Bambalapitiya which has an associate temple in Hambantota.
Keys were handed over to the selected families by the Company's
senior executives and staff members at a simple ceremony held at the
site where, in all, 50 houses are nearing completion.
Singer sponsored Tsunami Relief Fund netted over Rs 5 million with
contributions from Singer employees at all levels, personal
contributions by the directors of Singer NV, the parent company, and
international business partners Hitachi and Whirlpool.
Meanwhile, financial assistance was given to over 60 Company
employees and affiliate staff affected by the tsunami.
