Dutch police help tsunami affected Sri Lankan police families

Ambassador of Sri Lanka in the Netherlands Rupa Karunatilaka on May 6 opened an auction of works of art created by employees of the Police Corps of Rotterdam-Rijinmond in the Police Gallery, Rotterdam. The Mayor Ivo Opstelten of Rotterdam was the auctioneer. It was attended by a large gathering.

All the paintings - Oil, a aquarelle, photographs and pencil drawings were displayed on the Internet before the auction took place so that interested parties could make a 'pre-bid' and this was considered as a starting point. The top piece of the auction which attracted around hundred interested people, was a canvas painting done by Corps Chief Aad Meijboom, which fetched Euro 800 (Approx. Sri Lanka Rupees 104,000)

The profit of the auction was intended for construction of houses in Sri Lanka for police officers who are tsunami victims and for the orphaned children of police families.

The Ambassador in his speech praised the action of the Police Corps and was happy that the money will be spent in his country.
