WNPS appalled by recent elephant killings at Wilpattu National Park
The Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) of Sri Lanka is
deeply shocked by the news report in the Sunday Times of 12/06/2005 of a
she elephant and three calves shot dead with a T 56 weapon in the
Wilpattu National Park. This being the highest number of elephants
killed in a single incident in the recent past according to the report.
We are deeply disturbed that the perpetrators of this crime could
stoop to such low levels as to not even spare harmless baby elephants.
The WNPS as the oldest organization involved in wildlife conservation in
Sri Lanka makes a strong request to the Environment Minister to carry
out a fair and thorough investigation and bring to book the culprits. |
