Struggle for water
Kanaa Kandaen (I Dreamt)
Kanaa Kandaen follows a typical Tamil cinema screenplay but carries
out a new message which Tamil cinema has never spoken about. The subject
of the story is a dream to many people around the world starving for
water.
The director has focused on a solution to this global issue called
desalination of sea water. Desalination is an expensive process of
creating pure water from sea water. Sri Kanth, a post-graduate in
chemistry discovers a cheaper means of desalination.
The story is about the struggles the youngster goes through to
achieve his aim. Prithiviraj, who plays the role of an affluent
businessman gives a loan for the project and then cheats Sri Kanth to
buy the whole project rights. He has done an extraordinary job as a
villain.
The film has focused on the political issues and the struggles in
executing such scientific inventions. The explanation to carry-out the
process of desalination is unclear.
scientific-fictions
Therefore this film could be included into the list of
scientific-fictions. Normal cinematic trends have been included to carry
out the story. There is nothing peculiar about the screenplay but
certainly the story and message are different.
The film has proved that villains do not need to look scary but they
could be one among us and the difference is the aim in their mind which
leads them to provocative acts. The aim of Prithiviraj is to earn plenty
of money by hook or by crook. He admits that he loves the smell of
currency and he could do anything for it.
Sri Kanth marries his childhood friend Gopika and settles in Chennai.
He successfully accomplishes his investigation in turning sea water into
pure water. He becomes a doctor in chemistry. He seeks the help of the
government but they neglect. Sri Kanth, who gets hurt by their
negligence plans to get a loan from his college friend with his wife’s
support.
manuscripts
Prithiviraj, his college friend, forges the manuscripts related to
the loan and demands more interest in a short period of time. The young
couple refuses to pay the money. Prithiviraj demands the millions worth
project in return. Sri Kanth executes a master plan to get Prithiviraj
into trouble. he excels and achieves his aim.
The commercial needs of the production team push the film into
unnecessary scenes which deviates the film’s focus from its actual plot.
There are several other areas which could have been touched but director
has given more importance to romance and some family drama which is
irrelevant to such a film.
The political difficulties in carrying out the project have been
touched but the director, K. V. Anand has not focused on the importance
of water to society. Water is an important asset to society, to make the
film a little bit more emotional and the message worth, the director
could have touched on the social needs of water especially in a massive
metropolitan city like Chennai.
matured artiste
To pin the youths to their seat, some romantic songs and scenes have
been incorporated. Vidhyasagar has again given some scintillating
melodies. The protagonist and antagonist use the advantages and
disadvantages in the latest technology to prove their intelligence.
This film is different from Sri Kanth from his previous. He has lost
weight and changed his get-up a bit. He has seriously carried out his
role and he is slowly becoming a matured artiste. Gopika had proved
herself as a promising actress in her first film Autograph and she has
continued to prove it through her performance. The film has given her an
important role and she has carried it out well.
Debut Prithiviraj Malayalam hero turned villain in Tamil is the
highlight of the film. He acts out naturally without any flaws. His
clarity in expressing is vivid and the performance is simple with
authentic actions.
Although the film lacks family entertainment, it’s is a good film to
watch once for the innovative substances which have been blended to a
usual screenplay.
