The Thamilar Thahaval Aandu Malar, 2005
The 14th Anniversary Issue of Tamils’ Information, a publication in
Thamil and English, established in Toronto, Canada is now available.
It’s a monthly bulletin providing valuable information on many
matters, particularly to the Thamilians in Canada. And its Annual is
usually an excellent encyclopedic volume of research oriented and useful
writing but certainly not academic in style of writing.
The editorial board consists of S.Thirchelvam, Ranji Thiru, Vijay
Anand, Sasi Pathmanathan and Anton Kanagasuriyar.
S. Thiruchelvam a.k.a Thiru / Esthi, the Chief Editor was a well
known and path-setter journalist and editor while he was in Sri Lanka.
He had first worked for the Thinakaran as a topmost newsman and literary
columnist for the paper under the editorship of the late
R.Sivagurunatahan.
Later he worked in the newsroom of the SLBC and had also presented
several news programmes over the Thamil Service of the station. He then
moved to Yaalpanam and edited two influential weeklies, now defunct,
“Eelanadu” and “Eelamurasu”.
His son, Ahilan, was an outstanding student in studies and sports but
fell victim to an assassin’s gun intended for Thiruchelvam. This drove
him and his wife, Ranji, who was a teacher, to flee to Canada. And in
North America, Thruchelvam build up his reputation slowly and steadily
and is at present a well known figure in Scarborough, Toronto in Canada.
The Annual published by Ahilan Associates and produced by Eelam
Thamil Information Centre is made available in February each year to
coincide with the Annual Awards given to outstanding Canadians and a few
selected recipients from other countries. Yours truly while he was
living in the U.S. (2002-2004) was also one of the invitees to receive
such an honour.
The Award was given for my contributions to contemporary Thamil
Literature as a Sri Lankan.
This Annual is available from: Tamils’ Information, P.O.Box - 3,
Station “F”, Toronto, ON, M4Y 2L4, Canada.
“Growing with the Community” is the logo of this Annual and the
Bulletin and its aim is to entrench deeply and elegantly the path that
had been followed.
The Current Issue The 172 page bigger issue has very interesting
articles both in Thamil and English. Many contributions are on one of
the worst natural disasters this country has faced - the Tsunami. A Law
student from Canada, Harini records an eyewitness account of the Lankan
misadventure in a moving piece of writing.
As the chief editor says more than 70 thousand innocent Thamilians
have been killed during the 20-year war situation in the country and
within a few hours more than 20 thousand had lost their lives the
devouring massive and huge tidal waves.
