People's Peace Front commends President

The People's Peace Front has appreciated steps taken by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to enhance tsunami victims' lives by reconstructing the North and East.

The People's Peace Front in a letter to the President states: "People's Peace Front is a coalition of more than 200 peace organisations working in all parts of Sri Lanka emphasising the importance of ending the ethnic conflict in a frame work of negotiations. We have stood for this understanding from the inception of the coalition.

The People's Peace Front greatly appreciates the valiant step taken by Your Excellency to enhance the lives of the victims of tsunami by the reconstruction of the North and East region. All communities of Tamil, Muslim and Sinhala in the North and East are blessed with the fortune of working unitedly with the establishment of Post Tsunami Organisational Management Structure.

In this context, it will pave the way for progress in the peace process on the understanding and trust built among these communities.

When your Excellency's father tried to resolve the ethnic problem, protests were made by a group of narrow minded extremists in 1957, but, today, we wholeheartedly endorse the signing of the Joint Mechanism in spite of rigid objections of racists, and that, we are ready to extend the necessary strength and courage towards it."
