Appeal from MEP

THE Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) in a media release signed of its General Secretary Piyasena Dissanayake appealed to all progressive forces who contributed towards the formation of the United People's Freedom Alliance to unite and urged the JVP to rejoin the Freedom Alliance to retaliate the conspiracy of the reactionaries.

Dissanayake's appeal follows an MEP Central Executive Committee meeting decision on Thursday.

The release stated that the MEP is one of the pioneers among the parties of SLFP, JVP, Desha Vimukthi Janatha Party, Sri Lanka Communist Party, Lanka Sama Samaja Party and the Athulla Faction to form the Freedom Alliance on April 2, 2004.

It pledged to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country and to save the country from atrocities caused during the UNP regime.

The issue of Tsunami Rehabilitation Mechanism which attracted the concern of all quarters including the Maha Sangha was a conceptual difference among the constituent parties, which on June 16 exploded making the JVP to breakaway from the Freedom Alliance.

This is a situation that the MEP cannot be happy about but regret, as a party positively made suggestions to solve this as an internal crisis among friendly parties.

The MEP called upon the SLFP, the JVP and all other patriotic and progressive forces to workout a reunion in the interest of the country instead of falling a prey to the conspiracy of the reactionaries.
