LONDON, Thursday (Reuters) - Liverpool were hailed as the Incredibles
by Britain's media after they recovered from 3-0 down against AC Milan
to win Wednesday's Champions League final on penalties.
The miracle of Istanbul was how the Times summed up Liverpool's
astonishing comeback which earned the Reds their fifth European Cup and
their first for 21 years.
The Fab Five was the Daily Mirror's front page headline, referring to
Liverpool's most famous export, the Beatles.
Prime Minister Tony Blair sent the team a message of congratulations.
"Unbelievable. Incredible. Brilliant. The whole country is very proud of
you."
Under the headline Legends the Daily Mail said Liverpool had
completed the most amazing comeback in European football history at the
Ataturk Olympic stadium on 'a golden night that cannot be bettered'.
Even Lazarus would have applauded such a stunning comeback, said the
Sun who hailed 'The Incredibles' on their front page and Stevie Wonder
on the inside - Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard, who scored Liverpool's first goal early in the second half,
and goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek, who saved two penalties in the shootout,
earned most coverage.
"Dudek a hero reborn as Scouse nation rules Europe once again" said
the Independent.
Most papers agreed that midfielder Gerrard would now stay at the
Anfield club after months of speculation about his future. |
