US assists in reducing drug abuse among Asian youth
At-risk youths in Indonesia and the South Asia region will have more
help battling drug addiction through a grant from the United States
Government to the Colombo Plan. The U.S. gave USD 175,000 to the Colombo
Plan's Drug Advisory Program to fund programs which reduce the demand
for narcotics among youths, including training religious leaders to
organize "after care" centers for youth recovering from drug addiction,
the US Embassy said yesterday.
James F. Entwistle, charge' d' Affaires of the United States Embassy
in Colombo, handed over the check to the Colombo Plan Secretary General,
Mr. Kittipan Kanjanapipatkul Tuesday, May 3, at the U.S. Embassy, Mr
Entwistle commended the Colombo Plan's continuing commitment to
anti-narcotics efforts in the Asian region, stating, "The United States
is a strong supporter of the Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Program's
efforts to involve faith-based organizations in drug demand reduction
programs."
Kanjanapipatkul expressed deep appreciation to the United States
Government for its continued support of the Colombo Plan Secretariat's
programs. |
