Focus on maths, science and IT
The Ministry of Education is launching special programs to stress the
importance of Maths, Science and IT in the schools system.
A special maths improvement program commenced during the latter part
of 2004, and teaching and learning of maths is being improved throughout
the island, an Education Ministry release said.
A special practice test for the Ordinary Level has already been
organised by the Examinations Department while the School Based
Assessment program is being strengthened.
It is targeted to improve the pass rate in maths to 60 per cent at
the GCE O/L examination in December 2005. Science, IT labs (for O/Level,
A/Level) are being constructed, or refurbished and renovated since 2004.
Teachers required for all schools have been identified and vacancies
are being filled through NCOE diplomate placements and the new graduate
placements before May 31 for all subjects.
Maths, Science and IT are being taught in the English medium as well
as Grade 6-9 and in the A'Level Teacher training for English medium
teachers, provision of books, CD and resource packs will also be made.
From 2006, English medium option for four subjects including maths,
science and IT is available. IT for A/Level and O/Level students is
being introduced as curricular subjects in 2005-2006. Teacher training
has already begun and special television programs will create awareness
among students and teachers.
The Ministry recognises the critical importance of maths, science and
IT in further education (whatever the discipline), in seeking employment
upon leaving school or university and in being competitive amongst peers
local or overseas. |
