Contemporary Japanese architecture exhibition
The Embassy of Japan and the Japan Foundation is organising an
exhibition of Contemporary Japanese Architecture, displaying over a
hundred photographic images of some of the most exquisite contemporary
Japanese architectural designs in Japan. This exhibition has been
organised to introduce contemporary Japanese architecture to Sri Lanka
with a view to further promoting cultural exchanges between Sri Lanka
and Japan.
The exhibition displays a carefully selected repertoire of
contemporary Japanese architectural designs conceived by renowned
Japanese architects covering a span of a recent ten years between 1985
and 1996. The first part of that period coincides with an era of
economic prosperity in Japan where the architectural world was brimming
with life opening up new possibilities for architecture and culture in
general. A rich diversity of architectural expression that was achieved
during this period reflecting part of contemporary Japanese culture is
very much evident in these exhibits.
The exhibition also demonstrates the transformations that took place
in architectural design in the short ten-year period in Japan. The works
have been divided into seven categories, namely, metropolises,
medium-size cities, towns and villages, suburbs, reclaimed land,
countryside, and resort areas, thereby depicting how architectural
expression responded to changes in social conditions in Japan apart from
its geographical settings. The exhibition provides a better
understanding of the nature of Japan and its architecture today and also
drives home the fact that architecture is the product of climate,
society and especially, the times.
The exhibition will take place in Kandy in collaboration with the
Kandy Municipal Public Library, at the E. L. Senanayake Children's
Library Hall, Kandy from May 6 to 9, from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.
The same exhibition will also be held in Colombo, in collaboration
with the Public Library of Colombo from May 13 to 16, at the Main
Auditorium of the Public Library of Colombo from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. |
