National Stadium for Polonnaruwa

The Minister of Mahaweli and River Valleys Development and Rajarata Development, Maithripala Sirisena will lay the Foundation Stone for the Polonnaruwa National Stadium to be constructed under the Rajarata Navodaya programme at a total cost of Rs. 50 million at Vidyapura, Kaduruwela on April 22, 2005.

This new Sports Complex and Stadium will consist of a 400 metre track, a large viewing pavilion, separate courts for sports such as Badminton, Volleyball and Netball and all necessary facilities for conducting Long Jump, High Jump, Hop Step and Jump and other field events together with a fully equipped Gymnasium.

The centre of the Stadium will consist of a Football ground whilst a modern cafeteria will also be housed within the Stadium premises.

The entire construction work of this project will be handled by the Central Engineering Construction Bureau. The first phase of this project is scheduled to be completed within six months. The total cost for the first phase is estimated at Rs. 22 million.
