Prisons Chief quizzed

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) probing the escape of a remand prisoner from the Welikada remand prison yesterday recorded a lengthy statement from Commissioner General of Prisons Rumy Marzook.

According to the CID investigations, Senerath Banda Ranasinghe, a remand prisoner, had escaped while he was working near Prisons headquarters on a Vesak Poya Day.

The investigators said that the suspect Banda Ranasinghe was earlier arrested by the CID. He had been handed over to the Welikada Remand Prison. He had escaped from custody while working outside Prisons headquarters.

On the direction of IGP Chandra Fernando, CID DIG Lionel Gunatilleke had deployed a special team to trace the escaped remand prisoner.
