Lankan Women ruggerites take Bowl Trophy

The Sri Lankan Women's Rugby Team made history by bringing home its
first international trophy by clinching the Bowl Championship at the
Asian Women's Seven's Championship, which was staged at the Kallang
National Stadium, Singapore on 15th and 16th of April.
The Cup championship was won by Kazakhastan who beat Japan 25-5,
while the Plate was won by China by beating Thailand, 26-5.
In the Group matches the scores were as follows: Sri Lanka v Hong
Kong 7-10 points; Sri Lanka v Singapore, 5-7 points and Sri Lanka v
Uzbekistan 33-0. Plate Semi Finals: Thailand 27 points, Sri Lanka 0.
Sri Lanka secured the Bowl Championship by beating Arabian Gulf 21-19
and thrashing Uzbekistan 24-0.
The Sri Lanka Team, captained by Ruwani Deepika, comprises of girls
from Slimline SC, Army SC and Kelani Valley SC.
The Team was coached by none other than former Sri Lanka Sevens
Captain Hisham Abdeen, who brought fame by clinching the Bowl Trophy in
the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens in 1984. |
