Two quakes rattle Sumatra island
JAKARTA, Monday (AFP) - Two earthquakes measuring 4.5 and 5.6 on the
Richter scale rattled the western coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island on
Monday but caused no reported damage or casualties, the Meteorology and
Geophysics Office here said.
The first temblor hit at 3:28 am (2028 GMT Sunday) with a magnitude
of 4.5 and an epicenter some 33 kilometers (20 miles) under the floor of
the Indonesian Ocean some 240 kilometers southwest of the West Sumatra
town of Pariaman, the office said.
The second, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake, struck at 4:23 am (2123 GMT
Sunday) and was centered some 15 kilometers below the ocean floor around
140 kilometers southwest of Painan, another town in West Sumatra.
There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage, the
office said. |
