ITI/CISIR celebrates golden jubilee
The Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) successor to the Ceylon
Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (CISIR) completed 50
years of service on April 12, 2005. The Institute held a series of
activities to mark this event.
The Ceylon Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (CISIR)
was one of the twin Institutes recommended by a World Bank mission of
1952 to promote industrial development in the country.
The CISIR came into existence as an autonomous corporate institution
under a special Parliamentary Act on 12th April 1955. The CISIR was
succeeded by the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) that came into
existence on April 01, 1998 by virtue of the Science and Technology
Development Act No. 11 of 1994.
The ITI is a wholly owned organisation of the Sri Lankan Government
and functions within the purview of the Ministry of Science and
Technology.
The facilities of the ITI include a comprehensive complex of
well-equipped physical, chemical, microbiological and metrology
laboratories, which provide clients with specialised capabilities
through a complement of multi-disciplinary scientists. The institute
also has a pilot plant, engineering workshop and a technical information
centre.
The Institute's wide range of clients and external stakeholders
include both the public and private sector in industrial, scientific and
commercial sectors. The Institute offers a package of services that
include Research and Development, Consultancy, Development of New
Technology and its transfer, Training of Technical Personnel and
Testing, Measurement, Calibration and Repair activities.
The ITI is the country's largest scientific R and D and service
organisation and plays the role of being the leading inter-disciplinary
research institute in Sri Lanka. It stands committed to serve the nation
to meet the challenges of the ever-increasing competitive environment in
a globalized world. |
