Hit and run lorry kills two including constable
 

A hit and run lorry killed Police Constable Nishantha de Silva, 29, of Moratuwa, Modera Police and Wasantha Jayalal and injured Police Sergeant Palihawadena with ten others.

They were admitted to the Panadura base hospital on 13th, following an accident occurred on the Galle Road, Katukurunda.

Modera Police OIC Anil Masakorala said on the 13th night at about 9.30 p.m. two policemen were despatched to Katukurunda, Moratuwa to inquire into a fight between two parties.

While police constable Nishantha de Silva was attempted to snatch a sword from a person involved, a speeding lorry came and knocked down all persons including the policemen. The lorry fled away along the Galle Road. The Panadura police arrested the driver near the Panadura hospital. The body of police constable was found entangled underneath the lorry. The body was rushed to the Panadura hospital mortuary.

Moratuwa acting magistrate Joseph Fernando visited the scene on Thursday and held the magisterial inquiry. The magistrate who visited the Panadura base hospital has directed the Panadura Supdt. of Medical Services Dr. Sarath Siriwardena to perform the autopsies on the bodies.

Dr. Siriwardena certified that the deaths were caused following the injuries caused by a fatal accident. The Acting Magistrate remanded the alleged lorry driver and postponed the further inquiry for April 28. Modera Police OIC Anil Masakorala led evidence at the inquiry.
