N-E roads to be reconstructed

The Highways Ministry will launch a special project to reconstruct rural roads in the North and East. A Ministry spokesman told the Daily News that under the project, C and D grade roads in the North and Eastern province will be developed with financial assistance from the European Union (EU).

"The project will focus especially on renovation of rural roads maintained by the provincial council and local government authorities. Accordingly, it has been decided to improve 550 kilometres of rural roads in the North and East with foreign aid," he said.

The spokesman said the EU has pledged Rs 1.7 billion by way of a grant for the development of rural roads. "The EU has pledged assistance worth Rs 12 billion for Sri Lanka after assessing the progress of its development activities.

The funds to develop North and Eastern roads will be granted as the first phase of such assistance," he added.
