Nuwara Eliya horse races

Sri Lanka Turf Club will be organising three days of horse racing during the April festive season in Nuwara Eliya.

On the New year Thursday April 14, SriLankan Airlines will be sponsoring the "Governor's Cup. the main event in SriLankan horse racing:

On Sunday April 17, 2005 - International Distilleries will be sponsoring the IDL Gold Cup.

On Friday April 22, 2005 - Scan products will sponsor the Sunquick Cup, U.W. Sumathipala & Sons sponsoring the Sumathi Cup and E.W. Balasuriya & Sons will be sponsoring Sporting Times Cup.

there will be eight thoroughbred horse races each day commencing 10.00 in the morning.

Leading horse owners, Gamini Jayaratne, Ms. Shantha de Zoysa, Rajan Sellamuttu, Dhammika Attygalle, Nigal Austin, Anurath Abeyratne, Suranjith Premadasa, Gamini Kodithuwakku, Nalin Rajapakse, Roohini de Mel, Ajantha de Zoysa, Ms. Beverly Cramer, Anura Delgoda, Felix Congreve, Dallas Martenstyn, Anuk Soza and Dilipan Thyagaraja will race their horses during these days.

During the races there will be fashion shows and competitions for the Ascot Style dresses and Hats.

Dhammika Attygalle, President SLTC and Rajan Sellamuttu, Chairman Board of Stewards along with the Executive Committee is making every effort to see that the crowds at Nuwara Eliya and their visitors for the racing events. A crowd of well over 20,000 are expected to witness the races this year.

There will be foreign jockeys from Mysore and Bangalore Racing Clubs to witness the Sri Lankan racing along with spectators.

Sri Lanka Turf Club

Rajah Sinnathuray the Secretary who has just returned after witnessing the Dubai World Cup, the richest race in the world. A handsome prize money was given to the winner Roses In May in the Dubai World Cup for thoroughbreds.

According to him the racing was under floodlights and it was well organised at the Nad Al Sheba Race Course and the organising was done by the Dubai Racing Club and under the Rules of the Emirates Racing association. He states that it will take us a long time to come up to that standards.
