Trade union action given up

On the persuasion of the acting Deputy Provincial Director of Health Services, Trincomalee Dr. E. G. Gnanakunalan the health staff in Kinniya including those attached to the district hospital and the office of the Medical Officer of Health has given up the trade union action they initiated to express their protest against damaging the MOH office, Kinniya by a group of people employed by an International NGO.

Police investigations have disclosed that people employed by an INGO has attacked the MOH office with stones and damaged all the glass windowpanes. The reason for the attack is attributed to the Divisional Secretary, Kinniya taking steps to stop the construction of a row of latrines near the Kinniya Ferry Point by the said INGO.

The Divisional Secretary has been instructed by the District Secretary to stop construction of the latrines as the construction was done within the 100 metre area contrary to the Government rule.

China Bay police are conducting investigations.
