Nimal Horana's funeral today

The cremation of veteran journalist and former editor of Silumina, Nimal Horana, 75, will take place at the General Cemetery, Borella today at 4pm.

He died after a brief illness at the Teaching Hospital Ragama on Saturday.

Treading in the footsteps of a pioneer left wing mentor Henry Peiris, Horana was actively involved in the movement and was loyal to it until his death.

He served as the Editor of Samasamajaya and was attached to the editorials of several Sinhala publications such as Janadina and Dinakara.

He edited another Sinhala newspaper Dinaresa and worked to bring unity between the Lanka Sama Samaja Party and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

With the take over of Lake House in 1970, Horana joined the Silumina editorial. He was politically victimised when the UNP came to power in 1977.

Horana returned to Lake House as the Editor of Silumina when the People's Alliance formed the Government in 1994. Later he served at the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. as an Editorial Consultant until the PA Government was defeated in 2001.

Horana, a leading poet of the Colombo tradition authored several books.

The cortege leave his residence at 474D, Ranmuthugala, Kadawata at 1pm.
