by Jayaweera Sugathapala, Attanagalla special correspondent

"Funds allocated for the development of Nittambuwa and Veyangoda towns must be properly used and those projects should be completed within given time frame stressed Industries, Tourism, Investment Promotion Minister and Head of of the Gampaha District Co-ordinating Committee, Anura Bandaranaike.

He was speaking at a joint meeting of officials of the UDA, RDA and Local Government Institutions held at the Attanagalla Divisional Secretariat Auditorium to review the progress of projects launched in Gampaha district.

It was also revealed at the meeting that the flyover bridge at Veyangoda which came into a standstill during the previous regime will be recommenced soon.

A sum of Rs. 100 million will be spent for the development and upgrading of public utilities in the Veyangoda town. Priority would be given to the construction of the flyover at Veyangoda railway level crossing to minimise the traffic congestion in the town.

This town experiences a grave traffic jam and snarl on both sides of the level crossing when the gates are closed. Veyangoda traffic police do their best to clear the traffic but they are helpless at times, the meeting was told.

About 40 per cent of the work of the Veyangoda Central Market has already been completed.

The project is estimated to cost Rs. 35 million. Road network within the town limits including Ranasinghe Mawatha, Siriwardena Mawatha, Nidahas Mawatha, Banndaranaike Mawatha and main bus stand road will be widened.

Drains will be constructed on either side of these roads and sidewalks for the pedestrians too will be constructed.

In order to prevent indiscriminate parking on roads, separate parking facilities will be provided on the main bus stand road.

The construction of a shopping complex adjacent to the railway station for the benefit of commuters is nearing completion.

The final stage of the Nittambuwa Town Development Project is also to be completed within this year. A sum of Rs. 90 million has been set apart for the project. Under this project the present Sathipola will be relocated and modernised at a cost of Rs. 18,256,510.

A sum of Rs. 70 million has been allocated for the construction of a new trade complex at Nittambuwa town. One hundred and four (104) trade stalls will be set up in this two storeyed building for the convenience of the public.

A major part of the infrastructure development work within the town limits has been completed.

It was also revealed that work on 77 projects will get under way in the Attanagalla Pradeshiya Sabha area in the year 2005. A sum of Rs. 5.4 million has been set aside for these projects.
