The minister in his petition had stated that Siri Ranasinghe, the editor of the Lankadeepa newspaper had published an article as the front page lead story of the newspaper dated February 17, claiming to be a statement issued by the UNP with reference to the Supreme Court judgment of his expulsion case. He stated that the article had been published with a view to causing damage to the Supremacy of the Supreme Court and had challenged it. The minister further stated that he was not aware of the issuance of any such statement by the UNP and even if the UNP had, publishing such article would render destitute and undermine the authority of the Supreme Court. The petitioner stated that the Supreme Court on February 15, had decided that his expulsion by the UNP was invalid. He had been purportedly expelled from the party when he accepted a ministerial post in the government. He sought the court to inquire into the complaint and to punish the editor with an appropriate sentence. Sudath Perera Associates filed the petition. |
