Sea shells that emerged from tsunami - art exhibition

by Nadira Gunatilleke

We, as a Government and as a society should not let Tsunami victim children face another natural disaster or an artificial disaster created by evil forces.

The main objective of organising `Sea shells that emerged from tsunami' is to relieve children of their suffering, restore their self confidence and make them forget for a moment that their parents are no more, said Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Minister Vijitha Herath.

Addressing a press briefing held at the Government Information Department Yesterday Minister Herath said that it is the responsibility of the Government and society to ensure the stability of the tsunami victim children's future.

The ministry organised the art exhibition and the concert countrywide covering all tsunami hit areas. The children presented the concert using natural objects available in the welfare camps. Officials attached to the Department of Cultural Affairs provided them with the training.

The final exhibition and the variety show of selected items from the regional exhibitions will be held at the BMICH, Colombo 7 on March 2 and 3 opening at 9.00 am. Prizes and certificates will be awarded at 4.30 pm on March 3 at the closing ceremony.

The concert will be held at 4 pm on March 3 at the same venue. Paintings selected from the regional exhibitions will be put on display at the exhibition.

The same exhibition was held in Hanoi, Vietnam sponsored by the UNICEF. Valuable and important paintings will be displayed in the Tsunami museum to be built shortly, the minister added.

Minister Herath said that all diplomatic heads, representatives of voluntary organisations, local and foreign have been invited for the exhibition and the concert for the purpose of International exposure. This will help to obtain assistance for the Tsunami victim children. The daily needs of those children should be met in the first place.

All organisational aspects have been finalised and the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim children from all Tsunami affected ares will be brought to Colombo to participate in with the food, transport and all the other requirements provided.
