In the South Asian region too workers in the outsourcing industry are in an elite category already earning above average salaries. By end 2004 our neighbouring India had over 300,000 youth mainly with IT skills employed in the BPO industry which is just 5 years old. With over US $5.1 billion revenues in foreign exchange, employees are earning anything from US $ 300-500 a month. BPO industry in India is expected to grow at 40% with commensurate benefits for the workers as well as for the industry. By 2008 it is expected to have 1.2 million employees with a revenue potential upto 24 billion dollars forecasted. However the BPO industry is relatively new in Sri Lanka yet catching on. It is estimated that local BPO operation to be in the region of US $50mn with little over 20,000 employees and 30 operators at present.
