The Government is concerned about providing hostel facilities to undergraduates at least by October 2004. The Education Ministry Secretary appointed a Committee to identify the urgent needs and to process them on a priority basis. Accordingly, the requirements of the University of Sri Jayawardhanapura and the University of Peradeniya were processed in the first instance, the Education Ministry said in a release. The Committee considered to continue on-going hostel projects, construction of new hostels using government grants and acquire suitable buildings to convert them as hostels and identify suitable government land within close proximity to the university and negotiate with property developers to build hostels and to develop other commercial needs such as super markets, food courts, recreational facilities etc, to overcome the problem. The Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on January 5, 2005 considered a memorandum submitted by the Minister of Education and approved the following: University of Sri Jayawardhanapura Acquire all buildings in "Methsevana" situated in a 10-acre land adjoining the university to convert the existing buildings to be used as hostels/construct new hostels for 500 students; Estimated cost Rs. 80.0 million. Construction of a new hostel within the university premises for 800 students; work in the first stage (accommodation for 400 students) to be commenced in 2005. Rs. 150.0 million has been approved. The foundation stone for the new building was laid on February 21, 2005. Private Sector Investment - Sanction of the General Treasury be given to M/s Euro Lanka to provide accommodation for 2184 students. The first stage will cover 600 students and the university will pay a monthly rent of Rs. 600,000. The project would be completed in five years and the value of the lease agreement is Rs. 39.0 million. University of Peradeniya Construction of a hostel project for 500 students in the land identified by the university and be awarded to the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau; Estimated cost - Rs. 150.0 million. The project is expected to be completed in one year. Private Sector Investment - To provide residential facilities in close proximity to the university students and staff for a reasonable rent. Money will be invested by the private sector and once the lands are acquired, private sector investors will be vested the authority to develop the property. |
