by Nadira Gunatilleke

UNESCO has agreed to look into matters related to World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka responding to a request by the Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Ministry, Minister Vijitha Herath said.

Herath said UNESCO will send a special team to Sri Lanka to inspect the damages caused by the tsunami to World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka especially Jaffna and Galle Forts.

After the inspection tour, the team will seek the possibilities of assisting preservation work. The team will also inspect the other World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka. The team is due here tomorrow, the minister told a special press briefing at the Government Information Department yesterday.

Herath said Indian Ambassador Nirupama Rao expressed her willingness to implement an exchange program for tsunami victim children in Sri Lanka and India by May after seeing paintings and a concert by tsunami victim children.

A total of 100 paintings by Sri Lankan tsunami victim children were displayed at this exhibition, the minister said. Herath said USA has also expressed interest over the exhibition.
