Cardamom fetches record prices

by P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya

Cardamom which has been cultivated in higher elevations has fetched record prices.

This crop is widely cultivated in the Kotmale, Kabaragalla, Hanguranketa and adjoining areas.

Cardamom is popularly known as the Queen of the spices, and it mainly sold to Western and Middle East countries, from cultivating nations such as India, Tansania, Honduras, Vietnam, Cambodia, Papua New Guinea and others.

The crop has a high demand and is being used for flavouring food preparations, in confectionaries, and for brewing liquor items.

It is also being used for Ayurveda medicines. Cardamom fetches Rs. 700 to Rs. 800 per kilogram in the Kabaragalla area and this cultivation has been adopted at most scientific methods and the yield is said to be very high at certain seasons.

According to Radha Mathavan an expert in cultivating Cardamom in the Kotmale area, it should be planted in polybags or suckers, and thrives under Albizzia, Silver Oak and Toona trees. He says till the plants are about four meters high, it should be carefully looked after.
