RTT ECOholidays conducts water well restoration project in tsunami hit areas The managing partner of RTT ECOholidays, Kadawatha, Rohan Fernando, was conducting a tour for Vernon Fawcett from Subsea 7, one of the world's leading underwater engineering contractors in Scotland, and his family at the time of tsunami. They are now engaged in the restoration of water wells, which they identified as an immediate need. Fernando, volunteered by undertaking the task of cleaning wells, starting from the Government Hospital of Nakulugamuwa, Tangalle, with volunteers from Colombo. Rohan stated that most of these wells and small tanks along the shoreline are contaminated with salt water and are abandoned due to collection of debris and dirt from broken sewage lines etc. They use five industrial water pumps to drain contaminated water, sanitize with continuous testing and purifying until it is suitable for consumption. The process had to be repeated many times before it could be ascertained to be suitable. Up to the end of second week of February they have attended to over 300 wells and five tanks in Tanglle, Kudawella, Koraketiara, Rekawa, Kahandamodera, Wellodaya, Hambantota, Ambalantota. The Parappuwa tank at Wellodaya had been used by the whole village and was full of debris and foul smelling salt water. It had taken four days of 24 hours work for the company to drain the water and clear the debris. Fernando is thankful to the Sri Lanka Navy Base in Tangalle, whose assistance carried a long way in all activities and maintain rapport with the villagers and the Water Resources and Drainage Board in Hambanthota. The contribution extended by all other individuals and organizations were reminded with gratitude. Their work in Tangalle and Hambantota are nearing completion and would be moving their operations to Arugam Bay in the east coast shortly.
