Plans to modernise Sigiriya Handicraft Village by Irangika Range The Ministry of Small and Rural Industries will modernise the Sigiriya Handicraft Village through the National Handicraft Board by providing facilities to attract more foreign orders to the country. Under this program, the National Handicraft Board will explore possibilities to develop the Sigiriya Handicraft village by preparing handicraft-focussed strategies. Deputy Minister Sunil Hadunnetti said that the aim of the project is to increase value added productivity of craftsmen according to the requirements of local and foreign buyers. "Local craft items have a good reputation in the international market. But our craftsmen have not understood the internationally accepted value and importance of traditional handicraft items. Therefore the Ministry is expecting to educate handicraftsmen in the village to develop value added crafts by introducing novel designs and techniques to suit the international market," the Deputy Minister said. "The Ministry will also implement a long-term program to honour handicraftsmen and retain them in the sector by recognising their basic requirements at the village. Training programs to educate handicraftsmen on maintaining high quality, standard and good packaging at the manufacturing process will be organised by the Ministry in the near future," he said. |
