Record-breaking batting by Isipatana by Chris Dhambarage Isipatana College produced a record breaking batting performance as they dominated the opening day of the 42nd annual inter school Big Match against the traditional rivals Thurstan College played at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday. After being put into bat Isipatana composed three half centurions as they hit up 308 for 9 in the first innings which is their highest team total in the series erasing the previous best of 301 all out which they made in 1997. The best batting performance certainly came from Tharaka Waduge who hammered a splendid 90 while taking good advantage of a placid batting track. Waduge one of their more experienced players settled down to play a long innings from the beginning and was unfortunately dismissed ten runs short of a century. Waduge however rode his luck as he was dropped on one by Galagoda from the bowling of Lahiru Gamage. But apart from that setback Waduge batted quite sensibly and built up the innings along with Dilan Anuradha and Isuru Vindana. He accelerated the scoring rate after completing his half century and collected his runs from 87 balls with the help of one six and thirteen fours. Skipper Dilan Anuradha provided excellent support to Waduge with the pair adding 139 runs for the second wicket. Anuradha hit a well compiled 68 from 132 balls with eight hits to the ropes while Isuru Vindana further consolidated their position stroking a fluent 62 from 88 balls with five fours. Thurstan in reply reached 110 for 3 with opener Hasitha Perera scoring a sparkling 72 from only 66 balls with the aid of eleven boundaries. The match will be continued today. |
