| Hindu clerics engaged in tsunami relief meet President Hindu Religious Affairs Minister Douglas Devananda and a group of Hindu religious dignitaries involved in tsunami relief, called on President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on Thursday. Devananda and the Hindu clerics briefed the President on the relief work done so far and their plans for the future. They said the Hindu service Society, All ceylon Hindu Congress, Chinmaya Mission, Ramakrishna Mission and a host of other Hindu religious organisations have assisted them in their work, a press release said. They discussed at length problems they face in the execution of their activities, such as new land allocations for housing. President Kumaratunga explained to them the Government's policy and its construction plans. She said the new dwellings built for the affected people will have better amenities than before. The President said after the December 26 tidal wave catastrophe, Sri Lanka has been listed among the disaster prone countries. Therefore the enforcement of the 200 meter buffer zone in the eastern coast and the 100 meter rule in the Western coast would be vital to ensure the safety of Sri Lankans. |
