Kadirgamar in India, Singh to visit Lanka

from Upali Rupasinghe in New Delhi

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's special envoy Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar arrived in New Delhi yesterday on a visit to express Sri Lanka's gratitude to the Indian Government for their strong support after the December 26 tsunami.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka by the end of next month.

The proposed visit will be the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 18 years. The last to visit Sri Lanka was the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1987.

The Telegraph in its report on the Prime Minister's proposed visit to Sri Lanka, said it is a clear signal to identify Sri Lanka as a 'good neighbour'.

It will also be a categoric endorsement of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government's support for the peace process between the Sri Lankan Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, it added.

"After Rajiv Gandhi's assassination in May 1991, successive Indian governments have demanded the extradition of LTTE chief Prabhakaran, alleged to be the murder mastermind.

But with Delhi's strong support for the Lanka peace process in which the LTTE is a key player, the former has clarified it will do nothing to derail the process," the newspaper said.

Kadirgamar's visit is considered as an attempt to firm up the dates and the program of the Indian Prime Minister's visit to Sri Lanka. Kadirgamar will meet his Indian counterpart, K. Natwar Singh and other senior officials in the capital and discuss a number of issues. Dr. Singh is also scheduled to visit Mauritius.
