by Florence Wickramage The six-day 17th Commonwealth Forestry Conference begins on Monday February 28 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall in Colombo. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse will inaugurate the Conference and Environment and Natural Resources Minister A. H. M. Fowzie will participate. The theme of this year's conference will be "Forestry's Contribution to Poverty Reduction". A release from the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry states that the timing of the conference has significance since it is taking place only a few months after tsunami, which has destroyed not only many of our natural resources but also livelihoods of many people depending on natural resources. A total of 123 foreign participants from 27 countries and 25 participants from Sri Lanka will be attending the conference. The Conference is hosted by the Forest Department and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources along with the Standing Committee on Commonwealth Forestry. The Department for International Development (DFID) of UK and the Commonwealth Foudnation has provided limited funds to support the participants from developing countries while the Government of Sri Lanka will meet most of the local expenditure. |
