Lankan cueists suffer defeats

Bernard Perera reporting from Bombay

Pune, Tuesday, K. H. Sirisoma and W. A. J. Weerasinghe suffered defeats on the third day of the 4th Asian Billiard Championships now in progress at PYC Hindu Gymkhana Club tables. Sirisoma confronted Devendra Joshi, the top seed for the title this year according to present rankings on the third day.

Geeth Sethic who was the member one before the commencement of the tourney has dropped to the third slot with Pankar Advani rated number two.

Seven Indian cueists have shown that they are the top performers on the table game in Asia. With Sirisoma and Weerasinghe losing as many as three games each have dropped down drastically in the rankings.

They are left with remote chance of entering the quarter finals. Ashok Sandilye, a professional cueist playing in England too suffered a stunned defeat on Monday night playing against Aung San Oo of Myanmar. Though Sandilya was in control of the game Aung sprang a surprise to outclass the Indian by three set to two. This match was the second one that went on for all five sets.

Sirisoma who was expected to do well have failed miserably playing on a new format the 100 point system.

Sirisoma failed specially in the potting department during the first set. He did well with cannons sufficient to overhaul Joshis. No sooner Joshi got the opportunity he went on scoring heavily to end the set with unbroken break of 59 set ending in favour of him 100-41. The second set was a bit luckier for Sirisoma and was leading collecting six points from his first visit to the table.

Joshi too had a slow start picking up 2 and 17 points. A mistake made by the Lankan paved the way for Joshi to grab the chance to collect 36 points from well executed cueing. This he kept up till the end of the set and won it at 100-38.

Joshi knowing that Sirisoma was a hard fighter never loosened the grip what he got from the first two sets. Sirisoma went onto have a lead of 50 with Joshi on 11. Lankan playing an unwanted shot gave the opportunity to his opponent. This time Joshi made no mistakes and had an unfinished break to win the set and the game was comfortably won
