IGP orders crack squad to investigate Embilipitiya Courthouse blast by Sarath Malalasekera A special high powered squad of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was dispatched to Embilipitiya yesterday to conduct a full scale investigation into Monday's bomb throwing incident at the Embilipitiya Magistrate's Court. DIG (CID) Lionel Gunatilleke deployed the special squad on Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando's direction who said this was a very serious matter which should be investigated in detail. The IGP also directed the team to inquire into the security arrangements at the Embilipitiya Magistrate's Court on the day of the incident. Two persons including Prison officer, Sumanadasa, and another were killed in Monday's blast. Thirty seven were injured. Some are in a serious condition, hospital authorities said yesterday. Sabaragamuwa DIG Kingsley Ekanayake investigating with the CID said 52 criminals, including notorious criminal 'Army Suranga' had escaped following the bomb blast. DIG Ekanayake said two of the escaped prisoners were arrested on Monday night. They will be produced before court today. The grenade had been lobbed at the Prison Guard from the court cell as Police found the grenade pin inside the cell. The incident took place around 11.05 am. |
