The police yesterday launched investigations into a tsunami aid-fraud , which is said to have taken place at the Trincomalee Divisional Secretariat, where undetermined quantities of tsunami relief material to be distributed among the affected victims, have disappeared from the warehouse belonging to the Secretariat. Trincomalee district's Assistant Divisional Secretary A. Sinharajah told the Daily News that a yet to be determined consignment of goods had gone missing from the store. "These include some electric generators and various other material provisions given to us by the government, foreign donors, NGOs and other civil organisations to be distributed among the tsunami victims in the district," he said. Asked about details of the missing items, Sinharajah said that a full report would be made later to determine the loss. " We learned about the occurrence on February 21. We expect the arrival of our GA from Colombo to Trincomalee today (February 22) to decide on the matter," he said. Asked about the generators, he said that there were as many as 37 generators in the storehouse from December 30 , last year, of which 12 have disappeared along with a large quantity of bed-sheets and other dress materials. Police said they suspect inside-involvement in the matter as there had been no signs of breaking and entering into the store through doors or windows or the roof. The keys of the storehouse have been lost from the day of tsunami upto now, police said. Trincomalee police has recorded statements from several workers at Divisional Secretariat in relation to the investigation. |
