President sends condolences to Iran

President Chandrika Kumaratunga yesterday sent a message of condolence to Iran's President Seyed Mohammed Khatami on behalf of the people of Sri Lanka. Tuesday's earthquake in the Kerman Province of South Eastern Iran had caused the deaths of hundreds of people.

The President in her letter said, "Having faced an unprecedented natural catastrophe ourselves recently, we share your grief and stand ready to extend our warm hand of support in your quest to restore normalcy in the affected province".

President Kumaratunga said she was confident the spirit and the strength of the people of Iran would help them face this tragedy. She reaffirmed the strong bonds of friendships and warm relations that bind Iran and Sri Lanka, states a Presidential Media Unit press release.
