Trinco SMEs Sos for relief

by Ramani Kangaraarachchi

A survey carried out by the Chamber of Commerce Trincomalee has revealed that none of the small and medium entrepreneurs affected by the tsunami in Trincomalee has been able to restart their business.

Vice President of the Chamber K. Wickramanayagam said that there are over five thousand affected SMEs by the tsunami, living along the 238 km coastal line such as retail traders, fish vendors and vegetable vendors who can start their business with less than Rs 25,000. Some of them could restart even with Rs 10,000. But unfortunately the banks and relevant authorities have not identified this need and implemented any workable procedure, he said.

The Trincomalee Chamber of Commerce has set up a credit desk and appointed a credit coordinator to help the affected business community and is awaiting a response from negotiated funding agencies, he said.
