Aigburth records all time high prices Aigburth Estate under the new management of Suriyakanda Plantations (Pvt) Ltd, received an all time Colombo auction record for their off grade BOP1A at Rs 232.00. This was sold by Lanka Commodities Brokers Ltd. Under the new management various changes were made to the manufacture, as well as all factory machinery was refurbished thus resulting in Aigburth becoming the leaders in the mid grown.
Aigburth has been obtaining the highest NSA for the Rakwana range during the past eights months, Their brokers - John Keells Ltd has rated them No 1 in the orthodox mid grow teas. The factory is now running over capacity due to smallholders' leaf becoming available as a result of the high bought leaf prices paid by them. Devinda Amarasuriya, Director on being questioned on such a dramatic change in the estate said that this was due to adopting of modern management techniques, which is showing results already. These changes were deemed necessary in order to turn around for the plantation into a viable venture. Aigburth has a large unique kodi china seedling division just only a handful of estates in Sri Lanka had the foresight to retain and foster this variety of seedling tea. This quality season (March, July) due to the "kodi china" leaf should now fetch better prices in the auctions as they provide the made tea with a distinctive liquor. Suriyakanda Plantations (Pvt) Ltd has diversified into many minor crops such as vanilla, pepper and cardamoms, Janaka Boteju MD, who was instrumental in developing these crops now plans to direct export in order to further improve profitability. |
