Ministry seeks Rs.100m for rural development by Irangika Range The Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government has planned to reintroduce the Gramodaya Mandala concept throughout the country to develop the rural economy by using manpower and resources. The estimated cost for the program is approximately Rs. 100 million and the Ministry is looking for World Bank funds. Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon told the Daily News that the Gramodaya Mandala, which is a concept of late President R. Premadasa, has been defunct in the last few years. "The Ministry expects to implement various development programs through the Gramodaya Mandala targeting rural villages. We will also help villagers who have difficulties to sustain their livelihood," the Minister said. "Each Gramodaya Mandala is proposed to be managed by the Ministry and it will provide solutions for villagers' difficulties by considering those in Grama Sevaka division level. Small and rural entrepreneurs in villages will also benefit through this concept and we expect to provide them financial support as well," he said. |
