Weerasinghe victorious

Bernard Perera reporting from Bombay
Pune, Monday

Sri Lanka's veteran cueist W.A.J. Weerasinghe came back to form on the second day of the 4th Asian Billiard Championships when he outplayed young Singaporean Ang Boon C. Tommy three sets to nil yesterday.

The 73-year old Weerasinghe got off to a flying start in the first set totalling 34 on his first visit to the table. He puzzled the Singaporean with his long range cueing and top table play was excellent.

Weerasinghe never gave chance to his opponent to get on equal terms in this set and went onto win it 100-37.

However in the second set Tommy had other ideas and collected 27 points. Weerasinghe did not hesitate to go for his usual shots at this stage and got ahead scoring 54 points to take the lead.

This lead was too much for the youngster and he never made a good break to get past Weerasinghe. The set ended in favour of the Lankan 100-43.

The third set was a bit better for Tommy. He was in frout in the early stages. But Weerasinghe came back into the game strongly using his experience to overhaul Tommy.

Weerasinghe managed to finish the set in his two following visits to the table. Tommy fared a bit better collecting his highest score in the match 73 points. Weerasinghe will meet India's R. Thakker Luter today.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka No. 1 K.H. Sirisoma suffered second defeat at the hands of Myanmar's Khim MGoo in straight sets (3-0) Sirisoma failed to live upto expectations and lost the first set 102-52. His highest break being 33 points in the set while Khim had two good breaks of 34 each. Khim made a break of 34 to take the lead and kept on moving ahead smoothly.

Lankan came back to close the gap when Khim was on 44 and went onto reach 58. A bad miss at this stage by Sirisoma helped Khim to take control of the cue which he handled well to reach 78.

He completed the set in two visits. If Sirisoma is to reach the quarters he will have to come out with everything in store to win all three games on the preliminary round.

C. Praput of Thailand had a very comfortable victory over Pakistan's Imran Shahzad 3-0. Shahzad could manage a total of only 25 points from three sets.

Meanwhile India's youngster S. Kothari too came out with flying colours winning his game against Jia Sheng of Singapore.

Kothari had two breaks of over 50. The highlight on Monday was C. Praput's four over 50 points breaks.

Results: W.A.J. Weerasinghe beat Ang Boon C. Tommy (Sing) 3-0 (100-37, 100-43, 100-71), Khim MGoo (Myanmar) beat K.H. Sirisoma 3-0 (102-52, 101-73, 100-32), C. Praput (Thailand) beat Imran Shahzad 3-0 (101-04, 103-05, 100-16), S. Kothari (India) beat Lim Jia Sheng (Singapore) (101-42, 101-93).
