ITF offers $ tourneys to Lanka

by Dinesh Weerawansa

Sri Lanka has been awarded two International Tennis Federation (ITF) open ranking tournaments, which carries USD 10,000 each as prize money.

Impressed by the successful hosting of a series of international tournaments in recent times, the ITF has decided to award two ITF open ranking tournaments, which carry attractive cash awards.

Chief Executive of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA), Lionel Almeida said yesterday that they have decided to have both tournaments away from the National Tennis Centre (NTC) courts at Greenpath as a part of their promotion of the sport amongst member clubs and associations.

Almeida said the SLTA is highly impressed the way the Singhalese Sports Club (SSC) hosted last week's 22nd ITF Under-18 International championships, at which Sri Lanka's Oshada Wijemanne emerged runner-up in boys singles event.

"We want to take international tennis to our member clubs so that there will be greater awareness and enthusiasm at the clubs. We successfully experimented that by awarding our first ITF ranked tournament at SSC," he said.

The SLTA has now decided to award the two ITF International Men's Future Championships to the Singhalese Sports Club (SSC) and the Queens Club (Gymkhana Club).

Both SSC and CCC have been Sri Lanka's Test cricket venues and with the new move by the SLTA would see international tennis too coming to the two leading clubs in Colombo.

The SLTA CEO said the Queens Club has already undertaken to host one of the two international tournaments while the other will be awarded to SSC.

Accordingly, SSC has been asked to host the USD 10,000

ITF International Men's Future tournament to be worked off from April 4 to 10, 2005.

Meanwhile, the Queens Club has already undertaken to host the other USD 10,000 International Men's Future tournament at their Maitland Crescent Courts from November 26 to December 4, according to Almeida.
