Philippine rebels, troops clash toll rises to 16 MANILA, Tuesday (AFP) Fighting between Muslim rebels and troops raged for the seond day Tuesday in the southern Philippines island of Jolo, as the death toll rose to 16, the military said. Fighting between armed followers of Nur Misuari, a jailed politician and former separatist guerrilla leader, and security forces were concentrated in four towns in Jolo, a known stronghold of Islamic militants. Thirteen Philippine soldiers were killed in a single rebel ambush in the town of Patikul on Monday, Lieutenant Colonel Buenaventura Pascual said. Another soldier was slain in fighting in Panamao town on Monday. The same day two Muslim soldiers who were rebuilding a mosque as part of a civic project were killed in an attack in Parang, Brigadier General Agustin Dema-ala said. The military's southern command said 21 soldiers had been wounded in the clashes. Dema-ala, commander of an anti-terrorist task force based on Jolo, said there were also reports of rebel casualties. Scattered clashes were reported on Tuesday, and the military deployed at least two MG-520 helicopter gunships to aid infantrymen. The rebellion started when at least 400 Misuari supporters attacked several Jolo military detachments at dawn Monday, armed with recoilless rifles and other assault weapons. |
