Warne's visit will help tourism bounce back

Tourism industry leaders welcomed the role of international personalities such as Australian cricket superstar Shane Warne in helping the tourism industry to bounce back.

Sri Lanka Tourist Board said yesterday in a press release that intense media focus on Warne's visit will go a long way towards bringing back the tourists which will benefit the Sri Lankans who are directly and indirectly involved in the tourism business. "Visits by major international personalities like Shane Warne are of enormous benefit, not only directly through charity fund-raisers but also highlight the fact that the country is very much open for business," said Victor Abeyesekera, Managing Director, Hemtours.

Accompanying Warne on his three-day visit to the tsumai hit areas will be a film crew from Australian Channel Nine's high-rating "Sixty Minutes" programme. Also following the record-breaking spin bowler and his Sri Lankan counterpart, Murali, will be a top Australian sports journalist, Jim Wilson.

Warne's visit will also be the focus of Colombo-based international media agencies. In addition to documenting Warne's tour, the media will interview tourism experts about the country's efforts to kick start tourism and discuss the vast array of tourism attractions untouched by the recent tsunami - including the hill and tea country, seven world heritage sites and 15 national wildlife parks.

Warne will fly to the south on SriLankan's new Air Taxi service, which flew the Australian cricket team to Galle on their last tour in 2004. In Galle, he will spend time with children affected by the tsunami.
