Guerrillas suffer heavy casualties in western Nepal KATHMANDU, Sunday (Xinhua) The anti-government guerrillas have suffered heavy casualties in a fierce gun battle with the security forces early Sunday morning in far-western Nepal. "About 30 to 40 rebels may have been killed in the clash," state-run Radio Nepal quoted a security official as saying. The clash lasted for about four hours from 8:30 p.m. Saturday to 0:30 a.m. Sunday at Sundariphanta of Kanchanpur district, over 700 km west of Kathmandu, after the guerrillas suddenly attacked a patrol team of the security forces. The security forces used long-range weapons and mortars on the fleeing guerrillas, the security official said, on condition of anonymity. The bodies of six guerrillas have been found during a search operation carried out after the clash, and about 18 guerrillas have been confirmed dead, he noted. An 11-year-old girl and an assistant police inspector were wounded in the fighting, he added. Earlier Maoists have abducted 400 local businessmen in Doti district in far-western Nepal, according to news reports here. The rebels forcibly took the businessmen to an unidentified location on Friday, Annapurna Post, a daily newspaper, reported. |
