Govt invites private sector to build houses for displaced by Ramani Kangaraarachchi Dr. Nihal Jinasena of the Task Force to rebuild the nation said that the government has invited both national and international private sector organisations and support groups to participate in the housing project to relocate displaced people. He was speaking at a panel discussion on the role of the private sector in the post-tsunami reconstruction and rehabilitation effort held at Hotel Taj Samudra last week. "Any party interested in working with the government has to identify lands and finalise the design elements of housing projects in consultation with TAFREN. "Many people and organisations have already submitted their proposals and expressed willingness to donate funds. TAFREN will identify those who can cater to the needs. As the private sector has enormous capabilities, the government is confident that they have strong project management capacity to monitor the progress of this project," he said. He said initially temporary shelter will be provided to following their evacuation people from refugee camps. "Secondly, financial assistance will be given by the government to rebuild partly damaged houses, in safe areas. If damaged houses had been within 100 metres of the sea, they will be relocated in housing schemes set up in new sites. "At present the government is in the process of allocating state owned lands and purchasing privately owned lands, for this purpose. TAFREN would be sensitive to historical, geographical aesthetical and social requirements when building these houses," Jinasena said. |
