Separated by tsunami, lovers reunion ends in marriage

PORT BLAIR, India, Monday (AFP) Two lovers who were separated by the tsunami that battered India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands celebrated their reunion by marrying each other at a relief camp.

When the monster wave hit on December 26, both Sanjay Mistry and his girlfriend Kalpana Mandol had no idea whether the other had survived.

But only a day later they chanced upon each other in a makeshift shelter.

"We were lucky to meet each other again after tsunami the next day in a relief camp. But we could not marry each other as we lost all our wealth," Kalpana said.

However, their good luck did not end as one social organisation offered to pay for the marriage as their possessions had been washed away.

The newly-wed husband said he was optimistic about their future. "I am a carpenter by profession and hopefully there will be a lot of rehabilitation work in every corner of the island," he said.
