* Fourteen districts of the coastal belt were severely affected by a tsunami on Sunday, December 26, 2004.

* Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ampara, Hambantota, Matara, Galle, Kalutara and Colombo were among them.

* Loss of about 40,000 lives.

* One million people homeless.

* 6,000 people missing.

* 15,000 people are injured.
