After a high speed transit from the North Arabian Sea and a short stop in Male, the FS Dupleix French military ship arrived in Male on January 11th and in the extreme North of the Maldives archipelago on January 13th. The 4,500 T frigate home based on Toulon and specialized in anti-submarine warfare turned herself into a humanitarian assistance ship. Shortly after her arrival in Male, fifty tons of aid were quickly loaded at night by the crew of 240 sailors and stocked in the "helo hangar" (for helicopters). These precious goods coming from many different countries (mineral water from France and Scotland, mattresses from the Sultanate of Oman, clothes and shoes from Germany, rations from USA,..), finally arrived at destination on the island of Hanimaadhoo. the transfer by helicopter and local dhonies lasted all day. At the same time, the French medical team settled in Filladhoo, one of the most severely damaged islands of the atoll and several technical teams were dispatched to work on the damaged generators. The French doctor gave 70 consultations, and Lieutenant Ms. Aurelie Silvestrini, one of the Dupleix engineers, could proudly report the skipper, Captain Hugues Jardin, that two generators had been restarted on the islands of Filladhoo and Vashafaru. After a technical stop in Male around January 16 the ship left on a similar mission on the request of the Maldivian Security Forces to the atoll of RAA, states a dispatch of the French frigate Dupleix. |
